How we choose a fabric

How we choose a fabric

Materials

For us, every EEVE piece starts with the fabric. Actually with a touch. Long before we think about the final shape, the colour or the little details, we want to know what it will feel like against the body.

Because that is where clothing begins.

We spend a lot of time looking for fabrics that feel right. Soft against the skin. Comfortable to move in. Light when they need to be light, supportive when they need to be supportive.

But how a fabric feels is only part of the story.

We want to know where it comes from, what it is made from and how it was made. We look at the fibre itself, its origin, the way it is processed and what is added to it along the way.

Whenever possible, we choose fabrics with a natural or naturally derived origin and keep synthetic fibres and unnecessary additives to a minimum.

We are particularly mindful of materials such as polyester and other petroleum-based synthetics. We don’t want to use them simply because they are common or convenient. If a small amount of a synthetic fibre is needed to give a garment the stretch, strength or durability it needs, we want that choice to have a reason behind it.

THE EEVE MATERIAL TEST

Before a fabric becomes part of EEVE, it has to go through our own little test.

We touch it.

We stretch it.

We wear it.

We wash it.

And then we wear it again.

We pay attention to the things that aren’t always possible to see on a fabric specification sheet.

How does it feel against bare skin?

Does it move naturally with the body?

Does it breathe?

Does it keep its shape?

How does it feel after washing?

Does it still feel just as good after being worn again and again?

And perhaps most importantly — would we actually want to live in it?

Sometimes the answer is immediately yes.

Sometimes it takes a little longer.

And sometimes a fabric that looked perfect on paper simply doesn’t make it through the test.

We don’t mind that.
In fact, we think that’s an important part of the process.

We don’t want to choose a fabric simply because it is available, popular or easy to work with. We want to understand it first.

We don’t always find the right fabric immediately. Sometimes finding it means going through many samples before one feels right. Sometimes a fabric we initially love doesn’t work for the piece we imagined it for.

We are okay with that.

We would rather take our time than choose something just because it is there.

For us, choosing a fabric is about finding a balance between many things — how it feels, how it moves, what it is made from, how it behaves over time and whether it makes sense for the garment we are creating.

There isn’t one perfect fabric for everything. And we don’t think there needs to be.
We simply want to make each choice with care.

Because once a fabric is chosen, it becomes something much more than a material.

It becomes something that lives on your skin, moves with your body and hopefully stays in your wardrobe for a long time.

That is why we take the time to choose.
